We always say that having a vehicle implies many things that go beyond the purchase itself and we are not exaggerating, because driving through large cities entails great responsibility and great exposure to any type of crime, that is why this time we explain how the 2montachoques” work so that you are prevented.

How do Montachoques work?

When the criminals identify their victim, the car that is going to cause the crash will change lanes, joining in front of the vehicle, to later apply an unexpected braking maneuver with the aim of preventing the person who will be extorted from braking and being hit with him.

After that, the person who is staging the scene will get out of the vehicle to try to collect money for what happened. According to what was reported to the authorities, the amounts range from $1,500 to $35,000 pesos.

Regularly those who cause the incident are accompanied by another car whose function is to corner the victim so that they cannot escape from the place.

Most common times and places

According to what the authorities in the capital report, the hours in which this type of extortion can occur most frequently is when there is not so much traffic, since this allows the car drivers to follow their victim more easily, that is, between 11:00 and 11:30 am and after 10:00 pm.

The roads where more cases have been registered are:

Circuito Bicentenario

Calzada de Tlalpan

Viaducto Miguel Aleman

Periferico Adolfo López Mateos

Ignacio Zaragoza

What to do?

The Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) issued the following recommendations, in case of witnessing or being involved in an incident of this type:

-Keep calm and don’t get out of the car

-Call your insurance, report the incident, and give them your location

-If you do not have insurance and the montachoques begin to threaten you or become violent, contact *911 or also through the SSC Twitter account or the My Police App.

-Writing down the license plates, model and address of the vehicle used by the aggressors is very useful, since this is how they give it to the authorities and they register it, so that those responsible can be punished with up to 8 years in prison.

-Do not give money to “fix” the incident.

-Verify that the insurer’s personnel have official identification, uniforms, and legal documents that accredit them as part of the company.

-Do not lose sight of your belongings such as keys, driver’s license, insurance policy, cell phone, among others.

-Always be present during the verification by the staff of the insurance companies.

Who is responsible for the damages?

The importance of having comprehensive coverage insurance is that if you become a victim of this situation, your insurer is the one that will take care of it, because it is good to remember that this type of coverage includes expenses for damages to third parties, total theft of the vehicle, among other benefits.

The SSC also says that when the parties do not have an insurance policy and cannot reach an agreement, the two drivers will be referred to the corresponding civil authorities, so that a judge can determine the administrative sanction.
