The Mexico City government will continue its Permanent Driver’s License program in 2026, after Mayor Clara Brugada Molina confirmed its extension due to high demand since its reopening. More than 1.3 million citizens have obtained this document in the last year, reflecting the public’s interest in accessing this benefit.
According to the mayor, between November 16, 2024, and November 16, 2025, the city administration issued 1,390,606 licenses, a figure that exceeded the program’s initial expectations. The Ministry of Administration and Finance (SAF), headed by Juan Pablo de Botton Falcón, reported that the revenue generated amounted to 2,341,716,000 pesos, funds that will be channeled into a trust exclusively for mobility projects in the capital.
They also confirmed that the procedure, which only requires payment of fees, will maintain its current price of 1,500 pesos.
The Mexico City government explained that these funds will be allocated to improving road safety, promoting non-motorized mobility, and strengthening public transportation through three main initiatives. These initiatives include modernizing 66 school crossings, addressing 116 traffic hotspots, expanding the Ecobici bike-sharing system with 600 additional stations, acquiring 100 electric buses for the Passenger Transportation Network (RTP), and improving the Multimodal Transfer Centers (CETRAM).
The strategy aims to benefit both public transportation users and those who choose sustainable alternatives, prioritizing universal accessibility and the revitalization of public space. The Permanent Driver’s License process is offered at no additional cost beyond the fee payment, whether in physical or digital format, and can be completed at various locations, including SAF offices and Mobility Secretariat modules.
The Mexico City government anticipates continued high demand for this document throughout 2026, following an almost fourfold increase compared to the usual number of licenses issued.
