The Mexico City government unveiled three commemorative license plate designs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a special edition created to celebrate the capital hosting the tournament’s opening ceremony for the third time in its history.
These are limited-edition plates, intended exclusively for private vehicles. 60,000 plates will be available in three designs and colors: yellow, black, and white, featuring the image of the axolotl, Mexico City’s official mascot for the World Cup.
How much do they cost, and is re-registration mandatory?
Those with current license plates can request the commemorative plate without paying for deregistration, covering a cost of only 1,500 pesos.
The process will also be available for new, used, or out-of-state vehicles, provided the owners are up-to-date on their tax obligations and vehicle-related debts.
The City Government clarified that this initiative does not constitute a mandatory license plate replacement process, as it is entirely optional.
“The commemorative license plate is only available to those who wish to purchase it and is not applicable to motorcycles, but exclusively to private vehicles,” stated Mayor Clara Brugada during the presentation.
Where can I get the license plates?
The process will be streamlined and organized: online purchase will be available in January, and starting in February, distribution will begin at the offices of the Secretariat of Mobility and the Treasury.
To expedite service, hours will be extended and service points will be set up in different areas of the city, with the goal of delivering the license plate the same day or, failing that, within a maximum of three days.
