Five cases of measles reported in Mexico City; vaccination campaign intensified in Álvaro Obregón and Cuajimalpa

The Mexico City Public Health Secretariat announced that five cases of measles were confirmed in the capital during the past week, prompting the announcement of strengthened prevention and vaccination efforts to protect the public.

In a statement, the agency indicated that the field campaign has been intensified in the boroughs of Álvaro Obregón and Cuajimalpa, where the recent transmission chain is concentrated. As a result, fixed vaccination sites will be expanded, and efforts will be focused on high-traffic areas to reach a greater number of people.

Due to geographical proximity, Mexico City authorities are working in coordination with the State of Mexico government to promote joint actions and achieve a greater impact on the population.

Given this situation, the agency urged everyone, from children under 12 months to adults up to 49 years old, to get vaccinated.

At the end of October, the Secretary of Public Health, Nadine Gasman Zylbermann, announced that no new cases had been registered in the previous seven weeks, and therefore indicated that the measles outbreak would be declared over on November 23, following the six cases reported at the beginning of the year.

“The health sector has been working to strengthen epidemiological surveillance, contact tracing, and the establishment of sanitary cordons; it maintains constant monitoring to address the outbreak, gather complete information, identify critical transmission routes, and act promptly,” the Secretariat stated in a press release published on the evening of December 3.

It reiterated that the prevention and control measures are being carried out jointly and in coordination among all institutions in the health sector, including the Mexico City Public Health Secretariat, IMSS, ISSSTE, and IMSS Bienestar, reinforcing inter-institutional collaboration within the health sector.
