On the morning of Tuesday, November 18, a serious collision occurred between two units of the Elevated Trolleybus system in the eastern part of Mexico City, specifically on the section connecting the Santa Martha Acatitla station in the Iztapalapa borough with the State of Mexico.
Initial reports indicate that one of the units rear-ended another that was stopped. It appears the driver fell asleep at the wheel and was unable to react in time.
Two articulated trolleybuses were traveling toward Santa Martha; one of them (number 24085) was carrying a large number of passengers from Chalco and, as it approached the Santa Martha station, crashed into another unit that was stopped to allow passengers to disembark.
Users reported that the driver “was falling asleep,” but this still needs to be confirmed after the on-site investigation.
Approximately 20 people were injured, mostly with minor bumps and bruises. None were reported to be seriously hurt, but emergency protocols were activated and several paramedics arrived in ambulances.
Passengers were immediately evacuated from both vehicles. The windshield of one of the vehicles was shattered, and both vehicles sustained visible damage.
Service was temporarily suspended on this section of the line while the injured were treated and the vehicles involved were removed.
The incident occurred in the Santa Martha Acatitla area—east of Mexico City, in the Iztapalapa borough—near the elevated section of the trolleybus system that connects to Chalco.
The stopped vehicle, number 24005, was waiting to enter the bus stop just before Santa Martha, according to some reports.
Passengers on board the vehicle involved suffered various injuries.
Some people received medical attention at the scene, while others chose to leave on their own.
No serious injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of this incident.
