Sign up for the cardboard workshop in Mexico City: they’ll make skulls and catrinas.

As part of the Day of the Dead celebrations, the Xochimilco Mayor’s Office, through the General Directorate of Inclusion and Social Welfare, invites the community to participate in the Cartonería Skulls and Catrinas Workshop, a free activity that seeks to preserve one of the most colorful and representative traditions of Mexican folk art in Mexico City. Here are the details:
Designed for everyone to participate, this workshop requires no prior experience or expensive materials. Participants will only need to bring a few items they may have at home, such as:

recycled paper
paste
masking tape
acrylic paints

The activity is designed to foster creativity, craftsmanship, and community interaction while creating skulls and catrinas in the traditional Mexican cartonería style.

With this initiative, the Xochimilco Mayor’s Office promotes the preservation of folk art and the transmission of traditional knowledge in an environment of inclusion and citizen participation. Additionally, it seeks to help neighborhood residents reconnect with their roots and celebrate the spirit of the Day of the Dead through artistic expression.

When and where does it take place?

The Mexico City Catrina Cartonería workshop will take place from October 7th to 23rd, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, at the San Andrés Ahuayucan Cultural Center (Av. Juárez s/n).

Remember, to participate, you just need to show up at the designated dates and times with your materials. Your age doesn’t matter.
