Do you have any activities for Thursday? CNTE announces a mega-march for July 17 in Mexico City.

Sections 9, 10, 11, and 60 of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) will hold a mega-march next Thursday, July 17, in Mexico City to mark the closing of the stage of their struggle, in which, after 22 days of strikes, they secured a salary increase and other benefits. A day later, they will decide whether to resume their sit-in at the Zócalo.

After concluding a meeting with the Federal Education Authority of Mexico City, following three failed attempts, Pedro Hernández, general secretary of Section 9 of the CNTE, stated that the march will depart from the Human Resources Department of the Federal Education Authority of Mexico City, located at Xocongo 58, to the National Palace, where they intend to deliver a list of demands to President Claudia Sheinbaum.

“On Thursday at nine o’clock, we’re issuing a general call to all colleagues from the four sections, and we’ll arrive at the National Palace, where we’ll deliver a signed letter. We expect thousands of Mexico City education workers to attend, addressed to the president, once again raising these demands. We paused the strike, so we expect a very broad mobilization,” he said at a press conference.

What agreements did the CNTE reach with the Mexico City Federal Education Authority?

The teacher leader reported that the meeting with the Mexico City Federal Education Authority this Monday was successful, as the head of that agency, Luciano Concheiro, informed them that the discounts applied to 12,000 education workers for the 22-day sit-in in Mexico City’s Zócalo will be reimbursed in the second half of August.

She added that the 9 percent salary increase announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum was not reflected in their payments, so they demanded an explanation as to why, in some cases, it barely reached 5.5 percent.

“Although we received retroactive payment for the increase announced by the president this past two weeks, we formally request an explanation, a report of the items, concepts, and percentages, because it does not correspond to what we received in this increase. It is the authority’s responsibility to clearly explain the increase in which items, concepts, and scope,” she said.

She also reiterated her request for a tripartite meeting with the heads of the SEP (Secretary of Public Education), Mario Delgado; the Interior Ministry (Gobernación), Rosa Icela Rodríguez; and the Institute of Social Security and Services in Service of the State (ISSSTE), Martí Batres, to present their demands, such as the repeal of the ISSSTE Law and the standardization of benefits.
