The Lion King, one of the most beloved and long-running musicals on the planet, celebrates its impressive 27th anniversary of uninterrupted performances on Broadway in 2025.
Starting March 20, the African savannah landed once again in Mexico City, which has become the ninth global venue where this show comes to life.
Behind the scenes, a legendary creative team shines: Julie Taymor, who made history by becoming the first woman to win a Tony Award® for Best Direction of a Musical, is also the mastermind behind the costumes and iconic masks. Taymor continues to lead the pack, keeping the essence of the original production alive.
The music, of course, is another of its greatest treasures. The score includes Elton John and Tim Rice’s unforgettable songs from the Disney animated film, along with three new compositions by the duo, as well as additional pieces from talents such as Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor, and Hans Zimmer. Sounds from the album Rhythm of the Pride Lands are also added, amplifying the show’s rhythmic and cultural richness.
The savannah comes alive with a cast brimming with Mexican talent. Leading the roar is Pierre Louis, an actor and singer who powerfully portrays Simba. Back in 2014, he had covered the character in the Mexican production, a key moment in his career that deeply marked him. Today, the life cycle is back, this time as the protagonist.
In the role of the feared Scar is Carlos Quezada, who was part of the production a decade ago. His return promises a villain as magnetic as he is menacing. On the side of wisdom and nobility, Pisano brings Mufasa to life; Her voice is unmistakable, as she has been the official voice for characters like Scar himself in Disney’s live-action version in Latin America.
Feminine strength arrives with Majo Domínguez, who plays Nala. Her experience in shows like Shrek, Chicago, and AIDA supports her powerful stage presence.
History is also written with endearing returns. Eli Nassau, who was Stage Manager for The Lion King in 2015, now steps onto the stage as an actor to embody the charismatic Timon, one of the musical’s most beloved characters. His inseparable companion, Pumbaa, is played by Sergio Carranza, who returns for this adventure after having participated in the previous edition in Mexico.
In the production, Luna Manzanares plays Sarabi, Ariel Bonilla is Zazú, Melissa Cabrera plays Shenzi, Anton Diego Matus plays Banzai, and Manuel Bermúdez plays Ed.
