Monkeypox cases in Mexico City surpass 2024 figures in just three months; a strategy to combat infections is called for.

Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is one of the diseases that has raised alarms in Mexico and around the world in recent years due to the increase in cases.

Federal Health Secretary (SSA), David Kershenobich, confirmed last Thursday that no cases of monkeypox have been reported in Mexico so far in 2025, as has been the case in previous years. He emphasized that a vaccine has now been approved for use, although epidemiological surveillance remains in place.

This is despite the fact that the National Epidemiological Surveillance System, in its report as of week 19 of 2025, had recorded 174 cases of monkeypox in Mexico, a significantly higher number than the 15 infections recorded throughout 2024.

Monkeypox infections increase in Mexico City

The Condesa Specialized Clinic (CEC) reported that in the first three months of 2025, it detected a significant increase in monkeypox cases, exceeding the number of infections recorded in 2024 and 2023.

In a report recently presented by the Specialized Clinic, it detailed that during the period evaluated, 56 people met the definition of a probable case, of which 45, or 80%, were laboratory-confirmed.

He mentioned that the first case of the year was reported on January 23rd, after 45 days without notifications, highlighting that the total number of cases is 20 times higher than the same period in 2024 and represents a 10% increase compared to 2023.

He specified that 96% of these cases were diagnosed at the Condesa Specialized Clinic and the majority were cisgender men, with an average age of 33.

He noted that 38% of these cases are patients with HIV and that the primary mode of transmission was sexual, as it occurred in 93% of infections.

He also added that 44% of local infections were associated with sexual encounter venues.

While the remaining 4% were managed by the Condesa Iztapalapa Specialized Clinic (CECI), although the majority of patients resided in Mexico City (CDMX) (78%), cases were also reported in municipalities in the State of Mexico, one in Morelos, and one foreign tourist.

In total, 10 imported infections were identified, primarily in people exposed in San Pedro Pochutla, Oaxaca (Zipolite and Puerto Ángel), at an event in Tepoztlán, Morelos, and in the United States (California and Florida).

Therefore, it was deemed necessary to urge authorities to implement prevention strategies focused on these spaces, as well as to strengthen diagnostic testing in the metropolitan region.
