It’s now quite common to see dog walkers on the streets of Mexico City taking their pets out for a walk so they can relieve themselves or get some time off from the confinement of their homes.
But we’ve also heard of cases where these people mistreat their dogs, and the owners often don’t even notice. That’s why there’s a push to punish abusive caregivers. A census of dog walkers was conducted in Mexico City / FREEPIK
Dog walkers would be punished
In an interview with MVS Noticias, PAN representative Claudia Montes de Oca mentioned that she will present an initiative to classify animal abuse as a crime: “The goal is to regulate the matter to protect our dogs and their owners in Mexico City,” she said.
Between 2020 and 2022 alone, there were more than 17,000 reports of animal abuse, mostly involving dogs. That’s why the PAN member is seeking to close these legal loopholes and proposes imposing penalties of up to three years in prison and fines on dog walkers or other caregivers who don’t do their job properly.
“This has many loopholes, and we also want dog walkers to be professional in their work, so that’s why we’re seeking to regulate it, so they can offer us more services,” she stated.
