Mexico Braces for Heavy Rains and Hail as Low-Pressure Channels Approach

A powerful low-pressure system is bearing down on Mexico, threatening to unleash heavy rains and hail across several states in the country.

According to a statement from the National Meteorological Service (SMN), a combination of atmospheric instability, moisture from the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea, and low-pressure channels over the Northern Mesa, Central Mesa, and southeastern parts of the country will cause heavy rains and hail in several states.

The forecast indicates that the effects of these systems will begin today, with showers and occasional heavy rains expected in the north, northeast, central, western, southern, and southeastern parts of the country. Michoacán and Guerrero are particularly at risk, with very heavy rain forecasted for both states, while Oaxaca and Chiapas can expect intense rainfall.

The hot to very hot weather that has been prevailing across much of Mexico will continue, but a heat wave is expected to begin in Nuevo León (southwest), Tabasco, and Yucatán on Saturday. In the meantime, temperatures are forecasted to soar in several states, including Coahuila, Zacatecas, Durango, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Morelos, Puebla, State of Mexico (southwest), Guerrero, and Oaxaca.

Residents in affected areas are advised to take precautions against flooding, mudslides, and landslides. The SMN has warned that the heavy rain may be accompanied by lightning and possible hail, which could lead to rising river and stream levels.
