Every Sunday in May, the Mexico City Ministry of Culture’s (CDMX) Historical Walks program will offer free guided tours of various iconic landmarks in the capital.
The routes include archaeological sites, cultural spaces, and representative sites of pre-Hispanic and colonial history.
What is known about the free tours in Mexico City?
In commemoration of the 700th anniversary of the founding of Mexico-Tenochtitlán, the tours offer citizens the opportunity to learn about stories and events from the past from the places where they occurred.
The tours are led by specialists in history, archaeology, and heritage, who provide explanations in sessions lasting between 60 and 150 minutes, and no prior registration is required.
Sunday, May 11: “As long as the world exists, the glory and fame of Mexico-Tenochtitlán will never end.” Visit to models in front of the Templo Mayor, the Foundation Fountain, and a tour of Pino Suárez Avenue, an ancient pre-Hispanic road. The meeting point will be at the Plaza del Seminario on the corner of Moneda, 10:45 a.m.
Sunday, May 18: “Renewing the Universe. Huizachtepetl and the Aztecs, the New Fire Ceremony.” Tour of the archaeological site and the New Fire Museum, where the ritual lighting was held every 52 years. The location is on the Scenic Highway to Cerro de la Estrella, Km 2, Iztapalapa, 10:45 a.m.
Sunday, May 25: “Between Canals and Chinampas, from Xochimilco to Tenochtitlán.” Guided trajinera tour of the Cuemanco lake system to learn about the Aztec chinampas. The meeting point will be at the Cuemanco Pier in front of the Virgilio Uribe canoeing trail. This tour costs 100 pesos per person for use of the trajinera (capacity is limited to 18 people per boat).
These tours have been part of the capital’s cultural life for 40 years, and in 2025, they cover all 16 municipalities with more than 200 historical routes.
