“Héroes Paisanos” Program Begins November 28: Cross Up to $500 Worth of Merchandise Tax-Free

Starting November 28, 2024, the winter edition of the Héroes Paisanos program will facilitate the entry of compatriots visiting Mexico during the Christmas season. From this date, travelers can bring up to $500 worth of merchandise from the US to Mexico without paying taxes.

Expanded Tax Exemption

The program allows road travelers to benefit from an expanded tax exemption, increasing the usual limit from $300 to $500 per person. This benefit, valid until January 12, 2025, aims to make entry into the country easier and more affordable for those returning temporarily to visit family and friends.

How It Works

Each visitor can bring in merchandise valued up to $500 without paying taxes, provided they present invoices or sales receipts to support the value of the products. If these documents are unavailable, customs personnel can estimate the value of the items.

Additional Benefits

The tax exemption amount can be accumulated among family members traveling together in the same vehicle, maximizing the permitted value. However, residents of the border strip or region are excluded from this accumulated benefit.

Important Exclusions

Certain products are not covered by the tax exemption, including alcoholic beverages, manufactured tobacco, and automotive fuel (except for the contents of the vehicle’s tank).

Take Advantage of the Program

If you plan to travel to Mexico, this is a great opportunity to take advantage of the increased tax exemption and bring more merchandise without incurring additional taxes. The program’s operations will be active throughout the holiday period to facilitate the customs process and support Mexicans crossing the border during this festive season.
