Mexico City government officials inaugurated the Christmas season with the Poinsettia Flower Festival, from the El Recodo area, within Caltongo, Xochimilco.
After a tour in trajineras, which began at the Puente Urrutia Pier, we arrived at the aforementioned place, where these Mexican flowers are produced, one of the most emblematic of the end of the year.
The secretaries of the Environment, Julia Álvarez Icaza, Tourism, Alejandra Frausto, Economic Development, Manola Zabalza, and the general director of the National Commission of Natural Resources and Rural Development (CORENADR), Humberto Adán Peña Fuente, participated in this inauguration, together with local producers, businessmen and the media.
“We are going to do this poinsettia sale kick-off because we have to sell 1.7 million with the help of the producers,” said Peña Fuente. “December is a time for celebration, parties, posadas and gifts, accompanied and adorned with poinsettias, this flower that accompanies us in the most important month for the city,” added Zabalza.
“Mexico City is also the city of flowers, we just passed the cempasúchil season, we are in December with another of the most beautiful flowers, the Christmas flower,” said Frausto.
“She (the head of Government, Clara Brugada) could not be with us, we send her our greetings, but she is a convinced and honest fan of flowers, of soil conservation and is with the floriculturists,” added the head of the Environment of CDMX.
According to Álvarez Icaza, almost two million poinsettias were produced this year, by around five thousand producing families, who live off this tradition of cultivating and harvesting the Christmas flower, so it is important to consume this type of products directly from them, explained the official.
He also highlighted that Mexico City ranks third among all the states of the Mexican Republic as a national producer of poinsettias.
