More than a thousand voices singing El son de la negra, Cielito lindo and El Rey in the Plaza de la Constitución closed the first World Mariachi Congress and sought to break the Guinness record with the largest number of musicians of this genre in one performance.
And may Guadalajara forgive us, but Mexico City is the capital of mariachi, said the Secretary of Government, César Cravioto, at the end of the brief concert in which different groups of musicians participated.
He indicated that until now the record was held by Guadalajara with the participation of 700 mariachis, but today the record is broken here in the Zócalo of Mexico City with 1,132 musicians.
Next year we will support them again so that the Zócalo is filled with attendees and in support of culture, which is one of the great axes of the government of Clara Brugada, he pointed out.
Meanwhile, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, mayor of Cuauhtémoc, cheered the mariachi and the mayor’s office and congratulated the event for breaking the record: here there is the will to do it every year, that the city government gives us a chance, for sure, said the official, who wore a charro outfit.
At least 1,300 musicians participated in the closing of the first World Mariachi Congress in the Zócalo of Mexico City, with which, according to capital authorities, the record that had been set by Guadalajara was surpassed. Photo Ap
To which Secretary Cravioto responded: of course they will be welcome, while transmitting a greeting from the head of government, and reiterated the willingness of the governor to provide all the facilities.
The first World Mariachi Congress is an act that seeks to preserve mariachi music as intangible heritage of humanity, indicated the Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the event.
Chuy Salinas, a member of a mariachi group, said that after this first world congress we hope that mariachi music can be reaffirmed in some countries and reach more parts of the world and more people become interested, and in Mexico it will be strengthened among the new generations.
David Cárdenas, from the Mayor’s Office area of the Chamber of Commerce, said that this first congress was the result of a year-long joint effort to bring together more than a thousand mariachis.
He stressed that given the importance of this congress, the authorities of the capital government have decided to move the closing ceremony from the Monument to the Revolution to the Zócalo.
