Get to know the Mexican electric car that will be manufactured in the country and promises to compete with the major brands of this type of vehicle. During her first day as President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum announced the creation of Olinia, the first electric car made by Mexicans and assembled in the country. This vehicle promises to compete with major companies like Tesla and BYD, so here we tell you what this new car will be like.

The announcement of the Mexican electric car was made within the 100 commitments that Sheinbaum made in Zócalo CDMX, minutes after receiving the presidential sash and taking the oath as the new head of the country in the Chamber of Deputies of San Lázaro.

What Will Olinia, the New Mexican Electric Car, Be Like?

As part of the Technological Development Program for innovation, Sheinbaum announced that the Olinia car will be produced, a small car that will be 100 percent electric and accessible to the public. It will be designed by young Mexicans and assembled in the country.

The goal of manufacturing this new car is to provide greater support to consolidate Mexico as a leader in technology and sustainability. Therefore, the option of starting lithium production with its own technological development, producing low-cost drones with high efficiency, and many other things is also being considered.

What Does Olinia Mean?

The meaning of Olinia is “to move” in Nahuatl. Therefore, it was decided to give this name to the next Mexican electric car, which also promises to hit the market at a more affordable price compared to other brands like Tesla and BYD, where their cheapest units usually exceed 500,000 pesos.

With Olinia, the aim is to create a nationally-originated car that meets international environmental requirements, but also consolidates Mexico as a vehicle producer. In recent years, the country has seen growth in the assembly of electric and hybrid cars, but it still lacks its own model to compete in the global market.
