Law students, workers of the Judicial Branch and citizens marched along Paseo de la Reforma against the judicial reform that is about to be discussed in Congress.

Law students from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Acatlán School of Higher Studies, the Ibero-American University, the Pan-American University, La Salle College, Libre de Derecho and Tec de Monterrey spoke out against the reform of the Judicial Branch in front of the Angel of Independence to start the mobilization.

The contingent left the Angel of Independence towards the Senate with slogans against the judicial reform.

Workers from different jurisdictional bodies in the country organized themselves into contingents within the protest. Frida Mata, a member of the Twelfth Civil Court for eight years, attended the event in defense of the judicial career of workers, judges and magistrates.

“What motivates me to come is to inform people of the importance of a judicial career. We are not here fighting for salaries, benefits. “This goes much further than that. We are here fighting for the judicial career to continue,” said the worker of the Judicial Branch.

María Beatriz Pagés Llergo Rebollar, a Mexican journalist and former politician and member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party PRI, who served from 2006 to 2009as a representative of the LX Legislature of the Mexican Congress representing Mexico City, was also present at the march.

Beatriz Pagés pointed out that the reform would compromise the independence of the Judicial Branch so that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has absolute control over the Powers of the Union.

“The reform to the Judicial Branch is the gateway to authoritarianism. President López Obrador designed this reform to have one of the most important sectors of the country, such as the Judicial Branch, under his control. He wants to have judges, magistrates and ministers under his command so that his arbitrary and unconstitutional reforms, such as those that are part of Plan C, are approved without any obstacle,” declared Beatriz Pagés.

Also present was José Luis González Alcántara Carrancá, minister of the Supreme Court of Justice and professor at UNAM, IBERO, CIDE and ITAM.

“The reform to the Judicial Branch is the gateway to authoritarianism. President López Obrador designed this reform to have the most important Power, or one of the most important, under his control, such as the Judicial Branch. It is about having judges, magistrates and ministers under his command so that his arbitrary and unconstitutional reforms, such as those that are part of Plan C, are approved and there is no obstacle or control to prevent them.” declared Beatriz Pagés.

Samuel Torres, a former student of the UNAM Faculty of Law and a judicial officer, said that if the reform were approved, judicial independence would be lost because the campaigns of judges and magistrates would require financing that would be obtained from political parties.

“Politics should not be mixed with justice,” said Fernanda Espinoza, a law student who is marching to defend the judiciary.
