“Ukraine asks Mexico to arrest Russian leader Vladimir Putin if he attends the inauguration of the new president. The Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico issued this statement.

Diplomats emphasize that Putin is a war criminal, and there is an arrest warrant for him on suspicion of kidnapping and forcibly transferring Ukrainian children to Russia. This warrant was issued by the International Criminal Court, whose jurisdiction Mexico recognizes.

“This heinous crime will be one of many reasons why Putin, along with the rest of the Russian military-political leadership, will eventually have to face trial for initiating a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, sanctioning shelling, executions, torture, rape, and looting of the Ukrainian people. For now, we believe that the Mexican government will execute the international arrest warrant by forwarding it to the UN court in The Hague,” the embassy emphasizes.

The Ukrainian authorities also appreciate that the Mexican government invites representatives from all countries with diplomatic relations to the inauguration and express gratitude for the invitation extended to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Earlier, it was reported that Mexico’s newly elected president, Claudia Sheinbaum, invited Vladimir Putin to her inauguration.

In March 2023, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Putin and Lvova-Belova. They are suspected of committing war crimes, including forced deportations and population transfers, particularly of children, from the occupied territories of Ukraine. According to official Ukrainian data, approximately 20,000 children were deported from Ukraine to Russia since February 24, 2022.”
