In recent years, Mexico has seen a significant surge in demand for gender reassignment surgeries, according to Arturo Ramirez Montañana, president of the International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery. The country has become a major hub for transgender individuals seeking medical help to transition, with 1.7 million procedures performed last year.
Ramirez notes that the process of transitioning is a complex one, involving psychological counseling, psychiatric evaluation, and hormonal treatments before surgery can take place. However, he also points out that demand for this type of medical work has been increasing worldwide over the past eight to 10 years.
Mexico ranks third in terms of gender reassignment surgeries, behind the US and Brazil. Ramirez attributes the growth in Mexico’s market to its relatively affordable prices compared to other countries, making it an attractive destination for patients from around the world.
