Cities with Lower Perception of Insecurity Located in Northern States
According to the Encuesta Nacional de Seguridad Pública Urbana (ENSU), two new cities entered the top 6 for having a higher percentage of inhabitants who felt insecure during the second quarter of 2024. The Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI) announced this on July 24.
Perception of Insecurity by City
In June, 59.4% of the population over 18 who were surveyed considered their city unsafe. Women (61.5%) tend to feel more insecure than men (52.4%), although 44.4% of those surveyed reported modifying their habits when carrying valuables such as jewelry, money or credit cards due to fear of being a victim of a crime.
Cities with Highest Perception of Insecurity
Between April and June this year, the cities with the highest perception of insecurity were:
1. Fresnillo, Zacatecas (94.7% of its population reported feeling insecure)
2. Naucalpan de Juárez, Estado de México (89.2%)
3. Uruapan, Michoacán (86.8%)
4. Irapuato, Guanajuato (84.8%)
5. Tapachula, Chiapas (84.7%)
6. Zacatecas, Zacatecas (84.7%)
Cities that Left the Ranking
Chilpancingo de los Bravo and Cuernavaca, cities in Guerrero and Morelos, respectively, left the ranking as Uruapan, Irapuato, and Tapachula entered.
Perception of Insecurity by State
Fresnillo, Naucalpan, and Zacatecas registered a slight decrease in perception of insecurity compared to the first quarter of 2024.
Delinquency Rates
Between April and June, Mexico had a total of 547,491 investigations for various crimes, including robbery in its different forms, narcomenudeo (small-scale narcotics trafficking), dolous injuries, and domestic violence.
Cities with Lowest Perception of Insecurity
According to the ENSU, the cities with the lowest perception of insecurity are located in northern states. These include:
San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León (11.7%)
Piedras Negras, Coahuila (14.3%)
Los Cabos, Baja California (16.7%)
Los Mochis, Sinaloa (18.7%)
Benito Juárez, Ciudad de México (18.9%)
Saltillo, Coahuila (21.4%)
Safest Alcaldías in Mexico City
The alcaldías with the lowest numbers in all of Mexico City are Benito Juárez, Cuajimalpa, Miguel Hidalgo, Milpa Alta, and Venustiano Carranza.
Most Insecure Public Spaces
According to the ENSU, the public spaces where Mexicans feel most insecure are:
ATMs (67.9%)
Public transportation (62.7%)
Highways (53.7%)
Banks (52.9%)
