Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has called Donald Trump “a friend” and plans to write him a letter warning against closing the US-Mexico border or blaming migrants for bringing drugs into the United States.
López Obrador described Trump as “a man of intelligence and vision”, despite their past disagreements over issues such as immigration and trade.
In his planned letter, he will argue that closing the border would not solve any problems and is impossible to implement, citing the economic interdependence between the two countries.
He also intends to prove that migrants do not carry drugs across the border and that moving auto production back to the US would increase costs for American citizens by $15,000 to $20,000 per vehicle.
López Obrador’s comments come amid growing unease in the US over the transfer of car manufacturing plants to Mexico and concerns about the impact on the US economy.
Despite past tensions between the two leaders, they have maintained an outwardly friendly relationship, with López Obrador agreeing to use Mexico’s National Guard to reduce migrant crossings at the US-Mexico border. The letter is expected to be sent next week.
