In recent weeks, Mexico has experienced a large amount of intense rainfall across its territory.
According to the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), these rains are caused by various meteorological phenomena:
The first meteorological phenomenon causing them is the Mexican monsoon, characterized by intense rains accompanied by wind. This phenomenon is caused by the interaction between atmospheric pressure variations at different times of the year and the country’s geographical position.
This phenomenon is accompanied by upper-level divergence, which reinforces all types of air ascents and increases the chances of convective clouds forming storms.
Both phenomena will cause very heavy and intense rains in states like Chihuahua, Sonora, Durango, and Sinaloa, as well as showers in the Baja California peninsula.
The rains could be accompanied by wind gusts, possible hail, and lightning. Additionally, whirlwinds could form in areas of Chihuahua and Sonora.
These rains have also been caused by Tropical Wave No. 11, which is slowly moving off the coasts of Colima and Jalisco. This tropical wave also brings heavy rains and possible hailstorms in western Mexico and is expected to stop affecting Mexican territory by the end of the day.
Meanwhile, Tropical Wave No. 12 will move over the Yucatán Peninsula and interact with a low-pressure channel over southeastern Mexico. This interaction will cause very heavy to intense rains with lightning.
Additionally, a low-pressure channel surrounds the interior of the country, accompanied by moisture from the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the presence of a frontal system that will remain over the northern border of Mexico.
This is the rainfall forecast for the country:
- Very heavy to intense rains (75 to 150 mm): Durango, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and southern Veracruz.
- Heavy to very heavy rains (50 to 75 mm): Sonora, Chihuahua, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, State of Mexico, Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla, Guerrero, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.
- Showers with heavy rains (25 to 50 mm): Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Colima, Querétaro, Hidalgo, and Tlaxcala.
- Showers (5 to 25 mm): Baja California and Baja California Sur.
