Why so many Chinese migrants are crossing the US-Mexico border

A record number of Chinese migrants are crossing the US-Mexico border, with over 24,000 encountered by Border Patrol agents in the San Diego Sector this fiscal year, more than double the record from last year.

According to a South China Morning Post reporter, social media is one factor influencing their decision to migrate, as they see videos and discuss with others who have made the journey before.

Other reasons include a lack of political freedom and economic opportunities in China, as well as everyday issues such as being fined for having an unregistered child or not receiving workplace injury compensation.

A crackdown on border crossings by President Joe Biden in early June may also be contributing to the influx.

The majority of Chinese migrants who are stopped at the border seek asylum, with about half of them apprehended along the southern US-Mexico border.
