Some states of the Mexican Republic establish a certain validity for motor vehicle license plates

One of the requirements to be able to drive a motor vehicle within Mexico City (CDMX) is that it has a valid license plate. In some states of the Republic, vehicle license plates have a period of validity, so it is necessary to renew them every certain period of time.

Normally, the validity of the license plates of vehicles belonging to a certain state is stipulated within the traffic regulations. However, in the case of Mexico City (CDMX), there is no period of time indicated after which the license plates of a certain vehicle lose validity.

Despite this, there are cases in which the license plates of vehicles can be replaced with new copies, either by the purchase and sale of new or used units, within the Mexican capital or from other states. Each of these cases is contemplated on the official website of the Ministry of Mobility (SEMOVI).

Costs, requirements and how to process license plates in CDMX
According to the information published on the official website of the Ministry of Mobility (SEMOVI), there are three types of license plate registration procedures, that is, for new vehicles or those purchased at an agency, for used vehicles, as well as used vehicles, motorcycles and trailers for private use.

In each of these sections there are different types of procedures. However, the cost for the processing of any license plate is MXN 893 for the year 2024. In the event that the vehicle is considered electric or hybrid, the interested person must make an additional payment of MXN 447. For motorcycles, the cost is MXN 651.

Said payment must be made through a capture line known as “Multiple Payment Format for Registration of Private Vehicles”, which can be obtained by scheduling an appointment at the Treasury Service Centers. To do this, it is necessary to have a Llave CDMX account and provide the data requested by the system.

Although the procedure can be carried out in person, the authorities have enabled a section on the Internet to be able to do it online. Likewise, it must be considered that, whether in person or online, people must present the required documents and ensure that they are original, legible, without any erasures or corrections.

Subsequently, to complete the procedure and receive the set of plates, as well as the sticker and circulation card, an appointment must be made at the Vehicle Control Modules, through the Online Appointment System of the Ministry of Mobility.

According to the authorities, the documents that people interested in carrying out the procedure must present are:

  1. Official identification (original, current and with photograph).
  2. Proof of address in Mexico City or voter ID that includes the complete current address.

If the owner is the one who comes to carry out the procedure, and does not have proof of address or a voter ID with a full address visible, he/she can fill out a form to declare his/her address (not applicable to third parties with a power of attorney, or legal entities).

  1. Proof of ownership

3.1 Original invoice or invoice letter (certified invoices are not accepted).

3.2 If he/she is not the first owner:

Digital invoice (non-transferable), accompanied by the last sales contract, with a copy of the identification of the last seller.
Non-digital invoice (transferable), which does not have a chain or digital seal, or QR code, must present the corresponding endorsements that accredit him/her as the current owner.

  1. Paid capture line (original and copy).
