So Far This Year, 84 Minors Have Been Murdered in Mexico: Causa en Común

At least 84 murders of children and adolescents have been reported by the media so far in 2024, denounced the Mexican organization Causa en Común this Friday.

The note comes after two violent acts committed against two minors in less than a week in Guanajuato and Tabasco, respectively.

“So far in 2024, we have counted at least 84 murders of children and adolescents reported by the media, including the tragic case of Dante Emiliano in Paraíso, Tabasco. We condemn the violence that affects minors in Mexico!” pointed out the NGO in a statement.

According to reports, on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 21, Emiliano and his mother were walking through the streets of Paraíso when they were intercepted by a group of armed men intending to take the woman. Emiliano protected his mother and struggled with the criminals, resulting in him receiving at least five gunshots.

Meanwhile, on May 15, while accompanying his peasant parents in the municipality of Romita, Guanajuato, the three-year-old indigenous child Javier Modesto Moreno was a victim of disappearance.

On Thursday, the Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-DH) expressed its concern about these two violent acts committed against minors.

In the case that occurred in Tabasco, according to sources close to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the child was at his grandmother’s house when he received a call and went out. On the street, there was a car into which they tried to force him, but he resisted and was shot, then he was transferred to the Regional Hospital of Petróleos Mexicano (Pemex) where he died.

On Thursday, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, lamented the death of the minor but criticized the media for “magnifying” his death.

“As we are in the electoral season and everything that is to my detriment, especially since it is my state, the corrupt, who are very angry, magnify everything related to violence,” he declared in his morning conference.

“The minor left the house, that is the information we have, with three people who were in a vehicle. I believe they wanted to take him, one of them got out of the car, and they shot him,” he explained.
