An evening full of emotions and surprises took place during the Michelin star award ceremony
in Mexico City, where 16 chefs and their restaurants were awarded one star; and chefs Enrique Olvera, from Pujol, and Jorge Vallejo, from Quintonil, received two stars.
Chef Jonatán Gómez Luna of Le Chique restaurant in Cancún, in an interview for MILENIO, shared his feelings upon receiving a Michelin star, excited about fulfilling a dream he had when he started his career.
“It’s reaching a dream that I’ve had for 25 years, since I was in school; it’s entering an Olympus of cooks, and also an ultra-obligation that we have towards our diners, the team, our family, and the producers. It’s a pride, a satisfaction, and also a great challenge and a brutal responsibility. From today nothing changes, tomorrow back to work, that’s what it is. We don’t lower our guard, we continue and we go for more,” he assured.
Along with chef Jonatan Gómez Luna, Michelin stars were awarded to chefs of the caliber of Elena Reygadas, at Rosetta; Edgar Nuñez, from Sud 777; Guillermo González Beristaín, from Pangea, among others.
“When they gave me the news it was a compliment to my career, it was something brutal; my heart beat, it was something different. And tonight it doubled when they mentioned my name; now it’s time to rebound, go back home and put everything in perspective and keep working. Do what we like which is cooking and make people happy in our places.”
Chefs Enrique Olvera from Pujol and Jorge Vallejo from Quintonil received two Michelin stars, which means that it is not only advisable to go to their restaurants but it is worth making the trip to enjoy the gastronomic experience they offer.
The ceremony was held at the Roberto Cantoral Cultural Center where 157 restaurants from Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Baja California Sur, Baja California, and Mexico City were also recognized, which as of yesterday are included in the Guide; each of the chefs went on stage to receive their black chef’s jacket with the Michelin seal.
