In the meeting he held with NASA officials, the President said that they are looking for the young Mexican astronaut, Katya Echazarreta, to return to space.
On Tuesday, April 23, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reported that in his meeting with the heads of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Bill Nelson and Pamela Melroy, they are seeking for the young Mexican astronaut, Katya Echazarreta, to return to space.
In response to these statements, Mexico’s first astronaut who participated in NASA, Rodolfo Neri Vela, pointed out that the next participant must be selected through a serious call and under the guidelines of the institution.
“Mr. President AMLO: with all due respect, the next official astronaut of Mexico, whether male or female, must be selected through a serious national call, following NASA’s guidelines, and not by mere whim or caprice,” he emphasized.
Likewise, Rodolfo Neri stressed that in Mexico there are thousands of qualified women, with postgraduate degrees, excellent track records, and extensive experience in science and engineering.
“I regret this unfortunate slip on your part, surely due to some ill-intentioned advice,” he reiterated.
He added, “Mexican women educated in university institutions in Mexico deserve justice, nearly 40 years after I had the privilege of being the first and only official astronaut of Mexico to date. It surprises me that neither UNAM, IPN, nor anyone else, have raised their voice against an unjustified absurdity.”
