MEXICO CITY, MEXICO.- The earthquake early warning system of Mexico, SASMEX, has 30 years of uninterrupted and successful operation. During this time, the system recorded ∼9,800 earthquakes and broadcast 111 alerts.
The national coordinator of Civil Protection, Laura Velázquez Alzúa announced that this year the Seismic Alert message will begin to be sent through cell phones: “In order to disseminate the seismic alert to the population during 2023 through mobile telephony, the Government of Mexico implements the project to a comprehensive system for sending massive messages ” she said.
He also added that this proposal has been working since 2019 jointly with the Government of Mexico City, with the Secretariat for Citizen Security ( SSC ) and Citizen Protection, as well as with the National Digital Strategy Coordination of the Presidency.
