Mexico reaches its sixth wave of COVID in the month of Christmas festivities in which many families come together. In addition to the meetings and the cold season, the Ministry of Health expects an increase in infections.

The country reaches a new outbreak in December and January, as in 2020 and 2021; however, the agency said that mortality will be lower this time, thanks to vaccination against the virus. Currently, 84 percent of Mexicans have at least one dose of the COVID vaccine.

From November 29 to this Tuesday, December 20, Mexico went from 7,829 to 28,547 confirmed active cases of COVID, that is, an increase of 264 percent reflected in the 32 entities of the country.

Sixth wave of COVID was predicted since September

The Pan American Health Organization said since September that Mexico would experience a new outbreak of COVID, this after the authorities reduced infection prevention measures.

The organization’s director of health emergencies, Ciro Ugarte, said that “every time the measures and recommendations against COVID have been relaxed, there has been an increase in cases, and when this transmission is very high in certain areas it leads to an increase in hospitalizations and deaths.

The reason for the rebound in COVID in Mexico is the celebrations between November and early January, such as the Day of the Dead, Christmas and New Year, which together with the cold season lead to an increase in infections.
