Peru has ordered the Mexican ambassador to leave the country within 72 hours and has declared him “persona non grata,” according to a statement issued Tuesday by Peru’s foreign ministry.

In the statement, the Ministry said that the decision was made after the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, made some comments about the recent political situation in Peru, “which constitute an unacceptable interference in internal affairs, in clear violation the principle of non-intervention,” the statement said.

The Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary, Marcelo Ebrard, described the decision as “unfounded and reprehensible.”

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Relations reported that “it has instructed Ambassador Pablo Monroy Conesa to return to Mexico in order to protect his safety and physical integrity.”

The Mexican authorities also indicated that the Embassy will be in charge of the first secretary Karla Tatiana Ornelas Loera, the current head of the Mission’s Chancellery.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mexico’s Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said he had offered Castillo’s family asylum, which is already at the Mexican embassy in Lima.

Castillo’s family, specifically his wife and children, will be granted safe conduct to leave the country, Peru’s Foreign Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi Díaz said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Peru has faced nationwide protests following the arrest and removal of its former president, Pedro Castillo, after he tried to dissolve Congress and install an emergency government, a tactic lawmakers dismissed as an attempted coup.

He does not recognize Dina Boluarte

President López Obrador also did not recognize Pedro Castillo’s successor, Dina Boluarte. This after publishing a statement, where together with Colombia, Argentina and Bolivia, he supported the former Chotan president.

“Our governments call on all the actors involved to prioritize the will of the citizens that was pronounced at the polls. It is the way of interpreting the scope and senses of the notion of the notion of democracy contained in the Inter-American System of Human Rights. We urge those who make up the institutions to refrain from reversing the popular will expressed with free suffrage,” the letter reads.

Early elections

A few days ago, President Dina Boluarte presented a bill to advance the elections to April 2024. Likewise, through the Foreign Ministry, she called ambassadors from the countries that made the statement to her consultation.

Despite this, the Mexican president spoke again about the situation in Peru and asked the head of state to call elections as soon as possible. This initiative would make it possible to “restore the democratic order.”

“I respectfully believe that it is what would be best to stop the confrontation. That it be the people who freely decide both the situation of Congress and the Presidency, that

elections be called soon . I am sure that if it is called in the short or medium term, tempers will calm down, because there will be a way out and people will be able to choose and restore democratic order,” AMLO said on his morning show.

Statements that for the management of Dina Boluarte should not be given because they are “internal affairs of Peru.” A new conflict between two countries.
