On Friday, August 27, in the Santa Catarina neighborhood of Coyoacán, a bronze statue of the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) will be presented. The event is organized by the association of musicians, announcers and artists “Realidades en mi Mundo Mágico, AC”.
At noon, accompanied by the musician Steeven Sandoval and his mariachi, the statue will be unveiled “to publicize the Monument to our honorable President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the 4T,” explains the association in an invitation to the press. He adds that Steeven Sandoval will interpret the song “Mexico expects more from you”, written by the ecologist Eduardo Abelardo “Old Tree” and Paco Guízar, with a dedication for the president.
Eduardo Abelardo is also the founding president of Realidades en mi Mundo Mágico, AC, which is defined as a pro-environment movement that carries out reforestation activities and helps to distribute trees throughout the national territory.
The studio of the sculptor Oscar Ponzanelli -who also made the statue of López Obrador- will accommodate personalities from the world of Mexican music, as well as the press that will cover the event and, at least in its metallic representation, the Chief Executive Officer.
The presentation will also be attended by the National Association of Interpreters (ANDI), the Mexican Union of Mariachis (UMM), and the Fundación Transformando México.
This is not the first statue in honor of President López Obrador to emerge from the private initiative. In 2018, a colossal statue of the president was installed inside Rutilio Vargas’ ranch. The monument is a quarry statue that stands on the Rutilandia ranch – as Mr. Rutilio baptized his land – in the state of Querétaro. The place at that time was not open to the public, its owner still had not decided if he would give access to whoever wanted to admire the statues.
In addition, of the quarry colossus in Querétaro, there is a third statue of the president that is much closer to his official residence. The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) has it stored in a warehouse, just a few meters from the president’s office, a bronze bust of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Unlike the other two sculptures, the payment for this tribute came from the public coffers. The journalist Óscar Valdez reveals that the acquisition of the bronze bust by the Mexican government was the result of a negotiation between the Tax Administration System (SAT) and the artist Pedro Ramírez Ponzanelli.
In exchange for the statue being held by the SHCP, the SAT absorbed the artist’s taxes. It could be said that Pedro Ramírez paid his debts in kind before the Tax Administration System.
