Volaris announces new San Jose flights to Mexico City

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA — Volaris will launch new nonstop flights this year linking San Jose and Mexico City, the air carrier said Monday, providing a welcome counterpoint to a dreadful travel year amid coronavirus-linked economic uncertainties.

The new flights offered by Volaris would represent the first new international service for San Jose International Airport since the onset of the coronavirus.

The airline, using new anti-virus health and safety protocols, said it will add three weekly flights between San Jose and Mexico City in a move that could help connect families who might have become separated during months of pandemic restrictions.

“We’re excited to add Mexico City to the growing list of routes Volaris flies between San Jose and Mexico,” San Jose Aviation Director John Aitken said. “Mexico is an important business and leisure destination for many South Bay travelers.”

The three daily flights are slated to begin Nov. 9, according to Volaris.

“Volaris remains focused on providing the best travel experience at affordable prices so more people can travel to San Jose,” said Miguel Aguiniga Rodriguez, the firm’s markets development director.

Even before the announcement of the San Jose-Mexico City service, Volaris had been a major provider of flights between Silicon Valley and other destinations in Mexico. Volaris flies nonstop between San Jose and Guadalajara, Leon/Guanajuato, Morelia, and Zacatecas.

“Volaris continues to recognize the strength of the San Jose market with added service and competitive fares,” Aitken said.

The new San Jose-Mexico City service will launch with the airline’s Airbus A320 aircraft, which has seating for 179 passengers, Volaris said.

“We are confident that this new route will help more friends and relatives to reunite after so many months apart,” Rodriguez said.
