The production and export of automobiles in Mexico registered a drop greater than 90% in Mexico during the month of April, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) in conjunction with the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (Amia) .

It should be noted that it is an industry that suspended activities since March 31, since operations in the country were limited to non-essential sectors as part of the measures that were implemented due to the health emergency.

The Inegi reported that 3,722 cars were manufactured in April, that is, 98% less than reported in the same period in 2019. The figure means the historical low, according to the Inegi and Amia registry, which has been in place since 1988.

In addition, it is the second consecutive month that annualized falls have been recorded in this item.

The companies that had a 100% contraction in their production were Audi, BMW, FCA México (Chrysler and Fiat), General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, and JAC.

Meanwhile, 17,889 units were exported, which means a decrease of 90.2%. That record is the lowest in April since 1990.

Given the negative impact that has been registered in the sector, the automotive companies are in talks with the governments of the United States, Mexico, and Canada to resume their activity, since it is one of the important sectors for the economic revival of the region. from North America.

Fausto Cuevas, general director of the Mexican Association of Industry (Amia), mentioned for El Financiero: “It will be very important to continue collaborating with the Mexican government so that the economy can restart in the context that our industry is essential [… ] The automotive industry is a motor of Mexico and our commitment is to continue being active protagonists in the next stage after Covid-19 ”.

The American company Ford produced 18 units, while the South Korean manufacturer KIA assembled 3,704 cars.

Some companies exported cars during April because of some stored units months before in inventory, to later export them. The only shipowner that did not register movements in this regard was the Japanese Toyota.

In the period between January and April, a total of 912,155 cars were assembled in Mexican territory, which means a drop of 29.5% compared to the same period in 2019. In addition, it is the lowest production in the first four months of the year since 2011.

In the same period, 807,183 units were exported, which also registered a decrease of 28% compared to last year, consequently, it is the best figure recorded since 2013.

Decreasing figures are also recorded in the sale of cars. The Inegi reported that 34,903 cars were sold in April, which meant a reduction of 64.5% compared to the same period last year (98,346 vehicles). It is the lowest sales volume in April since 1997.

” As of March 16, almost 85% of the visits to the sales floors collapsed and 60% to the automotive maintenance workshops,” said Guillermo Rosales, deputy general director of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) for El Financiero. .

Car sales in March registered a 25% drop, only 85,517 cars were marketed, signifying the biggest decrease in the last 25 years.
